Freecell is a bit of an oddball in the solitaire world. The big difference? You start every game knowing exactly where every card is because they're all face up and exposed to you on the table.
Freecell is also pretty unique in that it's almost entirely based on your skill at solving puzzles (or abusing that undo button). Rare is the match of free cell that is unwinnable (though they do exist).
Just one piece of advice: don't get addicted.
There are 3 areas on the table used in a freecell game, the free cells themselves, the foundation piles, and the main playing area (the tableau). The free cells and the foundation piles will all be empty at the start of a game. The tableau itself confists of 8 piles: the 4 piles on the left will have 7 cards each. The 4 piles on the right will have 6. All of these cards will be face up from the very beginning.
To win at Freecell, you'll need to get all of the cards into the foundation piles. If you're familiar with Klondike, the foundation pile rules are exactly the same: piles start with an Ace, are built up in ascending order, and are organized by suit.
Free cells are used as temporary storage for cards. Each free cell can hold a grand total of one card.

Perhaps you're enjoying a blissful afternoon in the sun. You're playing a game of solitaire, but you're never really alone. There are the birds. Or maybe you hear the joyful laughs of the children. Or maybe you're more remote. Maybe the only sounds you hear is the air bristling through the forest trees. Or a babbling brook not far from you.

And we've got all your favorites. If all you've every heard about is "solitaire", then what you're probably looking for is actually called Klondike Solitaire. Or perhaps Spider is your game of choice. Aside from Klondike, this may well be the most popular game of solitaire ever known.
Or maybe you love a challenge. Maybe you love playing something where virtually all games are winnable and it basically all boils down to finding the appropriate strategy. If so, you're going to love Freecell.
